19th July 1966 FIFA World Cup England. Playing in the finals tournament after competing to qualify for their first ever World Cup the DPR Korea team recorded one of the biggest results of all time. Their opposition was two time world champions Italy. A loss would have meant the end of the road for DPR Korea but they won 1-0 and one of the tournament favorites was beaten in what was an Asian team’s first victory at the World Cup. The team that shocked the world made it to the quarter finals where they were beaten by Portugal but the team with speed, technique and stamina had written their name in to World Cup history. Despite slipping off the world stage after that they once more were able to qualify for the FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010 after nearly half a century thanks to their overseas based players such as FW HONG Yong Jo, MF AN Yong Hak and FW JONG Tae Se as well as by integrating local players from the two major DPR Korean clubs, 4.25 Athletic and Pyongyang FC. They managed to qualify in 2nd place after coming through a tough qualifying group which included World Cup regulars Korea Rep. and Iran plus Saudi Arabia and UAE to clinch a spot at the finals for the first time in 44 years.

The national team move into their 10th year in the spotlight. DOR Korea grabbed worldwide attention following 2000 by winning the AFC Women’s Asian Cup in 2001 and 2003. Then at the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup they proceeded to the quarter-finals for the first time in their history. At the youth level they beat China PR 5-0 in the 2006 final of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup to claim their first ever world title. In 2008, at the inaugural FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup they were crowned the first ever champions of that tournament. Led by 2007 AFC Women’s MVP and national team ace FW RI Kum Suk, the next generation of exciting young players are emerging. There are players in their early 20s who already have an undeniable claim on positions in the full national team such as MF RI Un Suk and DF HONG Myong Gum. They already keep their world ranking within the top 10 and this team with a proud history now enters a transition period as those youthful players search for a world championship.
