DPR Korea made a stunning international debut in 1966 at the FIFA World Cup™ held in the motherland of football, England, playing against Italy. DPR Korea's Pak Doo-Ik cracked open the Italian goal in the 41st minute, and after that the team defended the one-goal lead to capture a surprise 1-0 victory from the competition favorites. They forged ahead to advance to the quarter-finals - the first feat accomplished by an Asian team in football. It looked as though they may make it to the semi-final when they had a 3-0 lead over Portugal, but their steam ended there. Then there was a period where DPR Korea faded from the international scene, but they made an appearance in the 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifying round. Up against UAE, Thailand and Yemen, DPR Korea finished top of the group with a 3-win, 1-loss, 2-tie record. In the final qualifying round they were in Group B and ended up in fourth place with 1 win and 5 losses, failing to qualify for the World Cup finals. "We lost by a narrow margin. We must have a stronger determination to win these close, harsh matches," looks back Ri Hanjae, who plays for J.League's San Frecce Hiroshima. Adopting a younger line-up of players born in the 1980s for last year's East Asian Football Championship, they snatched a 1-0 win over Japan, against whom they were defeated twice in the final round of the World Cup preliminary competition, and seized a scoreless draw from Korea Rep. Their performance promises a bright future for DPR Korea.

DPR Korea claims an impressive number of titles - twice champion and twice runner-up of the Asian Women's Championship, one-time champion of the Asian Games, and champion of the 2003 Daegu Summer Universiade. They have even qualified for the Women's World Cup twice. During the development stages, the players are thoroughly drilled the traditional style techniques of linking short passes and thrusting through the opponent's open space. This unyielding philosophy produces a team that can go up against any powerhouse of the world. The players' individual skills have also caught everyone's attention on the international scene, and last April Ri Un-Sim and Kim Kiong-Ae transferred to Balinge IF of the women's 1st League in Sweden. DPR Korea failed to qualify for the Athens Olympics, but in the 2005 East Asian Women's Football Championship, they displayed a high level swift and physical football, taking a win from China PR and Japan, and finishing second overall with 2 wins and 1 loss. Head coach, Kim Kwang-Min reflected on the positive result saying, "Our young team has gained a lot of confidence and a valuable experience." Ranked 7th in the FIFA rankings, the best among Asian, DPR Korea will undoubtedly continue to sweep over Asian and the world.
