Mongolia joined FIFA in 1988, and the young team is at the developing stage. They demonstrated their steady growth in the 2003 East Asian Football Championship Preliminary Competition. They lost their first match to Macau-China, even though they were on the offensive. In the second match against Guam, Mongolia's offensive positioning again invited chances for the opponent to take wide open shots on goal inside the penalty area. GK Jargalsaikhan Enkhbayar's fine saves endured Guam's attacks and the first half ended in a scoreless tie. Using the half-time break to reconfirm their offensive and defensive balance paid off in the second half. Mongolia consecutively scored in the 51st and 59th minutes and held out against Guam's fierce onset to gain a 2-0 win. This was not any victoryムit was Mongolia's first international match win. Head coach Lkhagvajav Dorjjav openly expressed his delight saying, "It was a difficult match, and I wish to praise my players for their performance and for bringing a historical moment for Mongolian football." The Mongolia national team continues to gain forceムduring the March, 2005, preliminary competition for the 2nd East Asian Football Championship, they managed a scoreless draw in the match between the hosts, Chinese Taipei, against whom they previously lost 0-4. Their dream to qualify for the final competition will soon become reality.
