As of July 2009

The two years since playing their first ever international match in March 2007 (a 2-3 loss to Guam) has seen a real rise in their ability. Former coach of Japanese club Nagoya Grampus amongst others, KAMBE Sugao, took over the reins from player/manager Nick Swaim in February 2009. He had directed Guam’s rise to a mid-level team in the region and planned a similar improvement in ability for NMI. Just 4 weeks after this fresh start, they played at the East Asian Football Championship 2010 Preliminary Competition and despite losing all 3 games, managed to score in each one. Speaking of the new 4 back defensive system coach KAMBE said “I didn't think they would do this well Even if you know what the opposition is going to do, sometimes they still have the power to do it to you”. However the will to improve was visible for all to see and everyone involved valued the performance highly. The team, made up of ages varying from 15 to 43, took this valuable experience back home with them. KAMBA summed up saying “Rome wasn't built in a day. We won’t forget this experience” and that also sums up the high expectations for their next performance.

Football fascinates not only the Northern Mariana Islands men but also the women. The women’s football playing population is already over 100. A 4 team women’s league has been established. Their first international match was on March 2007 against Guam. They lost by 0-7 but in April 2008 they played again and drew 0-0. Most of the players have jobs but they now train 5-6 days a week after their work as part of an ongoing plan. Currently their style is to protect their goal from opposition attacks and then focus on attacking but up until now they’ve found it hard to launch attacks. Head coach KAMBE Sugao, who was appointed in February 2009, says “We need energy from the younger players. We need to build up their skill level.” commenting on the need to build up the player’s skill level starting from the basics. The strategy at first is to train enough so that the players are confident playing football
