On the 10th the Round 2 matches of the FIFA World Cup South Africa Asian Final Qualifiers were held. Group B’s DPR Korea and Korea Rep. clashed drawing 1-1.
This was the fourth time the two teams have met this year and the 4th draw in a row following their match at the East Asian Football Federation Championship Finals (1-1) and their 2 matches in the World Cup Asian 3rd Round Qualifiers (1-1,0-0). DPR Korea now have 4 points with 1 win, 1 draw and are in joint lead of the group with Saudi Arabia, whilst this was the first match for Korea Rep. who started with a draw.
The match was held in Shanghai, China PR and was 0-0 in the 18th minute when DPR Korea FW HONG Yong Jo earned a penalty after being brought down in the box. DPR Korea took the lead from the spot with HONG converting the penalty himself. At the other end, Korea Rep MF KIM Do Heon’s 23rd minute right sided cross was met by MF KI Sung Yueng who controlled well on his chest and shot with his right foot. The MF’s first goal was his team’s equalizer.
Following that Korea Rep brought on FW SEO Dong Hyeon and FW LEE Chun Soo as they pushed for the win but the DPR Korea defense held strong and didn’t concede another goal. However DPR Korea continued attacking positively and almost scored in the 83rd minute with FW JONG Tae Se’s left footed shot came close.
According to the AFC, DPR Korea coach KIM Jong Hun was full of praise saying “We played well today, I’m satisfied with the players. They were suffering tiredness (from the match away to UAE on the 6th). Without that we would’ve been able to perform even better.” Korea Rep. coach HUH Jung Moo said “We saw it as a match we had to win. But we have injury problems. And we weren’t able to play our best football.”
In the next round (October 15th) DPR Korea play away to Iran. Whilst Korea Rep. face UAE at home.
