Korea Rep. secure an away draw in Iran: FIFA World Cup Asian Final Qualifier

On the 11th Group B leaders Korea Rep. played away to 2nd placed Iran in their FIFA World Cup Asian Final Qualifier and drew 1-1. They protect their lead.

Korea Rep., who came into the match with a 2 wins, 1 draw record, started the match with a 4-4-2 formation. All three of their foreign players, including MANCHESTER UNITED (England) MF PARK Ji Sung and DORTMUND (Germany) DF LEE Young Pyo and SAMARA (Russia) DF OH Beom Seok, started the match with FW JEONG Shung Hoon and FW LEE Keun Ho combining up front.

Korea Rep. had the best of the opening exchanges with substitute MF YEOM Ki Hun came close with a shot from a FK in the 40th minute. However it was Iran, who hold a record 30 match unbeaten run (25 wins, 5 draws) in Azadi stadium, who opened the scoring. In the 58th minute Javad NEKOUNAM scored from a FK just outside the box and a little to the left of centre to open the scoring. Despite conceding continued to attack with LEE Keun Ho hitting the bar with a header one minute later. Then in the 81st minute MF KI Sung Yueng played a one-two with MF LEE Chung Yong and won a FK. KI Sung Yeong’s FK shot was to the right of centre and just outside the box and was well saved by the GK. But the rebound from that save fell to PARK Ji Sung who reacted first to squeeze the ball past the GK ‘s hand into the goal.

Korea Rep.’s dramatic equalizer earned them a valuable point on enemy territory. Theirnext match is April 1st at home to DPR Korea.
