The 16th Asian Games: Japan Wins Gold medal with IWASHIMIZU Azusa’s Deciding Goal

Women’s football matches of the 16th Guangzhou Asian Games were held on November 22nd. Japan won their first championship title after beating the former champion of the 2006 Asian Games, DPR Korea by 1-0.

In the group stage, Japan of Group B, advanced to the next stage by ranking first in the Group with 1 win and 1 draw, competing with the host team, China. The match maintained at 0-0 until the 3rd minute of extra time. A shot made by Japan’s DF KINGA Yukari was saved by China’s goalkeeper. FW OHNO Shinobu followed up to score a goal and Japan won the match 1-0. DPR Korea, which beat Korea Rep. 3-1 in extra time, advanced to the final. In the final, the DF IWASHIMIZU Azusa scored a goal with a header by MF MIYAMA Aya’s corner kick at the 28th minute of the second half. Then players FW RA Un Sim who scored 2 goals in the semi- final, helped the team fiercely attack Japan. Because of Japan’s tough defense lead by goalkeeper YAMAGO Nozomi, Japan won the gold medal defeating DPR Korea 1-0.

In the race for the bronze medal, Korea Rep. beat China 2-0 with goals made by FW PARK Hee Young and JI So Yun. China made 12 shots without any success during the match, ranking 4th and losing the bronze medal.

Japan’s women’s football team winning the title for the first time
